    Fires being fanned again..

    I have been pondering recently a personal question I have asked myself many times since I first read in depth about the rise of fascism in general and the Nazis in particular in the 1930's. Would I have the courage and moral steadfastness to oppose such malevolent and socially destructive forces if they were to reappear?

    In 2016 the arrival of the Trump phenomenon in the United States and Brexit in the United Kingdom, and the accelerating irrationality and incoherence they brought with them perturbed me at the time and ever since. In particular it was the denial of the scientific rationality which underpinned the progress of the past two centuries in Western society that caused me most concern. It was an uncomfortable ending to my life long optimism that no matter what happened humans were essentially rational, were in control and would continue to move forward and find solutions to our problems.     It’s all about me

    It is surely self-evident to say that if you set out to say or write anything, a lecture, a letter, a newspaper article, a book, the resulting work will be largely about yourself. That it is your biases, your opinions, your education, your society, your life experiences which contribute to and give a flavour to the content. I have reflected on this over the past few years, intending to write a book and on each occasion, with different starting points and different storylines it unraveled to a point where I just couldn't couldn't join up all the threads.
