    The road to ‘EUR’

Fascism was substantially the cause of two world wars in Europe in the 20th century. The EU was formed to reduce the chances of that ever happening again. It is appalling to see the rise of this primeval and destructive force again. Fascism is not the solution! It is a political philosophy, movement, or regime that exalts nation and race above the individual and stands for a centralised autocratic government headed by a dictatorial leader, severe economic and social regimentation, and forcible suppression of opposition - or a tendency toward or actual exercise of strong autocratic or dictatorial control.

    Grianan in 1878

About three miles from Derry, on the summit of a small mountain eight hundred feet high, overlooking the Foyle and Swilly, and commanding a magnificent view of the hills and valleys of county Donegal for miles around, has stood for several centuries the ruins of what was once the grandest palatial residence in Ireland, and supposed to have excelled the regal abode Tara. For at least one thousand years before the introduction of Christianity into this country the Grainan of Aileach was first erected by the Pagan Irish, and the Druidic priests, no doubt, celebrated their mystic rites on the spot that afterwards was the site of regal splendour and…

    Grianan of Aileach

Many of the sites you find on the web describing GrianĂ¡n of Aileach present a different mix of information on this beautiful and mystical location so I have tried to provide a brief but broader description and timeline. I also have a back story which is interweaved with this beautiful place. My memories of GrianĂ¡n really start in the early 1960s when my school friends and myself learned to drive. There were barbecues held within the building, and I also used to ride an ancient Triumph motor bike across the border on unapproved roads to visit it.

    Zhang Huan in Florence

This exhibition in Florence in October 2013 was very impressive, and one which we were lucky enough to visit. The backdrop of the city of Florence spread out below the Forte di Belvedere was spectacular. In 2006 Zhang took up sculpture after converting to Buddhism. He also involved the body in his sculptures; his earliest sculptures were giant copper hands and feet, magnified versions of fragments of broken Buddhist figures that he found in Tibet. He seeks to discover the point at which the spiritual can manifest via the corporeal. He uses simple repetitive gestures, usually regarded as meaningless work-for-work's-sake chores. Buddhism, with its temple music, sculptures and philosophy are…

    Fakers, Frauds & Falsehoods

There are potentially two broad sources of fake or false news. The first is propaganda, a deliberate targeted piece of information. The second is poor quality analysis with sloppy thinking and although this is frequently false and dangerous it tends to be at the level of a ill informed opinion rather than directed falsehood.
